Bay Area Family Church was started in 1998 by local members of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU), as a way to express our values and faith (or vision and mission) as a community.

FFWPU was founded by Rev. & Mrs. Sun Myung Moon in 1996, as an international and inter-religious association of individuals and families who aspire to live according to the values and principles taught by our founders.

Together Rev. & Mrs. Moon have established many organizations throughout their lives as a way to address the needs of the world and create opportunities to live for the sake of the greater good. [For more info, see 'Learn More']

They teach that the family is the only institution established by God, and that the family is where we truly grow to understand God through the four realms of heart: parental love, children's love, sibling love, conjugal love. Therefore the emphasis throughout their teachings is not only the spiritual health and salvation of the individual, but also of the family, as a foundation for a healthy society.

Raised in North Korea, Rev. Moon's family converted from Buddhism to Christianity in 1930, during the Japanese occupation of the peninsula, which was at that time a very dangerous thing to do. Rev. Moon’s lifelong mission began on Easter morning in 1935 at the age of 15. While deep in prayer on a mountain side he had a profound encounter with Jesus and was called to continue the work that Jesus had begun. The following 10 years were a period of searching for a truth that would answer fundamental questions about the nature of God and the universe. Rev. Moon studied electrical engineering in his college years, in both Japan and Korea, and at the same time led a life of intense prayer, study of the Bible, and devoted service to others. The meaning of his calling from Jesus was revealed to Sun Myung Moon through what would later become the Divine Principle. In 1954 Rev. Moon founded the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity. This was the beginning of his public ministry to bring God’s love and peace to the world.
